It’s Summer Time!: Time to Double-down on Maat!

By Bro. Mxolisi Ozo-Sowande / T. Sowell

It’s Summer time, but the living ain’t easy;

Isfet is jumping and evil is high.

The Solstice is calling, Sisters and Brothers, you and me;

To live, love and build in Maat – Diligently!

For our ancient Kemetic Ancestors, the Summer Solstice was an extremely important annual occurrence in the flow of the astronomical events of the universe. Among other very important realities, it was recognized and celebrated as the day that Heru (Horus) defeated his uncle, Suti (Set), a practitioner of Isfet, the ruler of darkness, confusion and deadly conspiratorial divisiveness.

The Summer Solstice opened the gates to a two-week period of reflection and celebration wherein our ancestors renewed themselves in the consciousness that the defeat of Suti was not (is not) a once-done-forever-done reality; a period of individual and collective self-reflection, self-purification and cleansing aimed at strengthening everyone in the determination that the results of the Heru-Suti encounter shall be the order of life for all time, for everyone – for individuals, families, communities, nation and world.

According to some versions of the Heru-Suti battles, the “defeat” of Suti was, more correctly, a hard-won transformation of the considerable powers embodied in that entity away from anti-Maat endeavors; a transformation that earned Suti a supreme position at the head of the Boat of Ra, to use those considerable powers to ward off Isfet (fear, ignorance, superstition, and the destructive conspiracies to which they give birth), to ward off the enemies of Maat and their desire to wreak demonic havoc upon the individuals, families, and communities of the nation and the world.

So every morning rise up with vision and purpose;

Control our thoughts and actions for creativity;

And do all we can, in every way we can,

For African unity and prosperity.

The two-week reflection and celebration period launched by the Summer Solstice served to get all

Heru (rt.) and Suti here are twining stalks of lotus and papyrus around a standard which is anchored at the bottom in a shape resembling the ib, the heart, and surmounted by a kheper, the scarab, who is the Sun at dawn, the first of the five stages of the Sun’s journey each day. This symbolizes the return of the light after darkness and turmoil, putting the world in balance again. . . . Suti represents the inner power, or 'rulership in the inner world'. Heru represents the outward looking vision, or 'rulership in the outer world'. The balance comes via the push/pull of the dynamism, and in the balance comes reconciliation. The wise sovereign balances within himself those forces strengthening individuality and those forces strengthening co-operation.

Kemetians to realize that the same Heru vs. Suti battle was being waged within themselves, and bring them to renew and double-down on their commitments to the way of life that Maat inspires, commands and empowers. It served to inspire their doubling-down on Maat, and The Virtues, Values, and Wisdom arising from their hundreds of centuries of collective commitment to Maat. It served to inspire their renewed dedication and diligence relative to these pillars of the sacred way of life — through every breath of life and every beat of their hearts, through every thought and action, in all things. And to allow the consciousness and character arising from such to be the nurturing light and spirit by which they would guide their children into the completeness of their own divine-human existence and potentials.

As it was with those Ancestors, it surely needs to be with you and me, surrounded as we are by Isfet’s deadly tinsels, in all truth. In the two-week time that Summer Solstice opens and in all the days of every season, we need to take some good looks at ourselves to see where, how and why we are merely talking-the-talk (if we are even doing that) and utterly failing to walk-the-walk. We need to be about the business of understanding and committing, and doubling-down at the deepest levels of heart and soul, to:

  • Maat – Truth, Justice, Righteousness; Harmony, Balance, Divine Right Order; Reciprocity;
  • The 42 Precepts / Confessions of Innocence to which Maat gives life;
  • The Ten Virtues for NTR-like (Godly) existence: control of thoughts and actions, devotion to purpose, freedom from resentment, the ability/willingness to know the difference between right and wrong, the real and unreal – especially within yourself, etc.;
  • The Wisdom embodied in the Sacred Texts of Our Priests-Prophets-Scholars;
  • Nguzo Saba Principles and the Messages of the Kwanzaa/Nguzo Saba Symbols;
  • The Sacred Way of Life expounded by the Indigenous African Tradition (or other) to which You are called.

It’s Summer time, and we know living ain’t easy;

Isfet is jumping and evil is high.

But our Creator, our Ancestors and our Children

Are calling us to rise up for Nation Building.

What is it that needs to be reborn and strengthened in your life? What needs to be transformed to enable you to be a more effective practitioner, protector and proliferator of Our Sacred African Way? Your decisions and actions during this period of the year will reflect strongly throughout the summer and the rest of the year. Let the energy of the summer sun, and the profound awareness, consciousness and determination of our ancestors as reflected in the Sacred Traditions to which they gave birth resonate within you – always!

So let us rise up, and accomplish what we will

The world of Truth and Justice together we must build

A world of balance and harmony, divine right order and reciprocity

A world of Truth, Love and Beauty, and sacred humanity

The world of Truth, Love and Beauty our children surely need!

A world of Truth, Love and Beauty for all Eternity!!

It’s Summer Time!!!

Ankh, Udja, Seneb !!!
